Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. 모더니스트의 기율: 최문규 + 가아건축사사무소 Modernist Discipline: Choi Moongyu + Ga.A Architects • 최문규(연세대학교 교수)의 건축은 주어진 조건과 익숙함에 대해 의심하고 대안을 제시하는 생각에서 출발한다. 이 생각을 명쾌하게 다듬으며 설계는 간명하게 정제된다. 단순한 기하학, 단면의 분화, 부분과 전체를 통합하는 동선, 내외부가 교호하 는 시선. 배형민(서울시립대학교 명예교수)의 분석처럼, ‘평면과 단면의 문제를 구조와 디테일로 연결하는 모더니즘의 원칙’ 을 통해 이룬 성취다. 하지만 그의 건축은 드러나기보다 자세를 낮추고 뒤로 물러나 배경이 되고자 한다. 사람, 도시, 자연으 로 우리의 시선을 확장하고 복잡한 삶의 현실을 끌어안는다. 건축을 통해 더 나은 세상을 만들 수 있다는 믿음이 구축한 모 더니스트의 기율이다. Choi Moongyu’s (Professor, Yonsei University) architecture begins by questioning given conditions and familiar conventions and thereby proposing alternatives. As these ideas are clarified, the design is refined toward simplicity. Simple geometries, differentiated sections, circulation that integrates parts into a whole, and views that shift between inside and outside. As Pai Hyungmin (Professor Emeritus, University of Seoul) observes, these are achievements grounded in ‘the principles of modernism that connect plan and section with structure and detail’. Yet rather than asserting itself, Choi’s architecture withdraws its presence, stepping back and seeking to become more of a backdrop. It directs our attention towards people, the city, and nature, while embracing the complexities of life. This is the discipline of a modernist, built on the belief that architecture can make the world a better place.
