In this sweeping fantasy adventure worthy of the bards, a band of heroes must rise up to face an ancient enemy that threatens to throw their world into chaos.

For millennia the land of Amarra was guarded by five Druid Orders: Jade, Ice, Spirit, Sky, and Sun. But the clans splintered long ago, and without their protection, Amarra is struggling in the face of blighted crops, monstrous aberrations, and pitiless pirate raids.

Looking toward a future as High Druid, Kiana Paletine is certain that if the Orders were reestablished, peace and plenty would follow—but tensions are running high. Tired of the politics and eager to finally make a difference, Kiana sets out to enlist the help of her estranged sister, Ravaini.

Soon a series of visions begins to haunt her, and Kiana learns of an ancient druidic artifact called the Shiver Seed. This powerful relic has fallen into the hands of the malevolent Deep Ones, who seek to use the Seed for their own nefarious purposes. If Kiana can find the lost Ice Druids, she may be able to retake the Seed and save the clans—but if the druids fall to the Deep Ones, all of Amarra will be in danger.

DEBUT Trained (and overprotected) since birth to step into her father's role of High Druid, Kiana isn't sure that her path leads where others have led her. A call in the back of her mind asks her to find the reasons why the other five tribes of druids have vanished as her own tribe's power begins to fail. Setting out with brave companions and a loyal fox in tow, Kiana seeks answers, freedom, and maybe even love. On the journey, she'll gather more comrades and learn about the forces, some sinister, some benign, that are manipulating the world around her. If she's lucky, she'll become the person her family believes she can be along the way. VERDICT Searcy's debut novel is a fun romp that will feel nostalgic to players of Dungeons & Dragons, as it seems to be the first adventure in a larger campaign. This will appeal to readers (teens and up) who love a good fantasy with a mix of humor and interesting worldbuilding.--Mary E. Butler

Searcy’s run-of-the-mill epic fantasy debut treads familiar terrain, sending a young elf with magical powers on a perilous quest to prevent the destruction of her world. Kiana, daughter of the High Druid Ozmand Paletine, is frustrated by her father’s refusal to prioritize restoring the five Druid Orders that once protected their people. She is convinced that doing so is the only way to save the continent of Amarra from external threats, but Ozmand, who has been training Kiana to be his successor, insists the time is not yet right to do so. Frustrated, Kiana sets off to join her sister Ravaini, who abandoned their family’s magic traditions to join the war against the pirates responsible for their mother’s death. Searcy tosses in a rote romantic subplot alongside predictable escapes from monstrous foes, including the Deep Ones, villains with mind-controlling abilities and “lacking the capacity for kindness or empathy.” Modern language (a combatant notes that Kiara “thinks she’s pretty tough shit”) doesn’t help with suspension of disbelief. There’s little to make this stand out in a crowded market. Agent: Cole Lanahan, Seymour Agency.
