Thirteen-year-old Lily is furious.

She and her mother are forced to move again after her mother's break up with the latest loser boyfriend. Now they're broke and they'll have to spend the winter in Uncle Wes's creepy house in Cape May, New Jersey.

And the place is crawling with ghosts.

From the spiteful teenager who mistakes Lily for her high school nemesis to the restless spirit of her eccentric Uncle Max, Lily is haunted by a host of unhappy phantoms. But why are they here? And what do they want?

With the help of an intriguing new guy, local boy Vaz, Lily tries to find out. But just as they are on the verge of piecing together the mystery, a casual family dinner turns into a beachfront showdown with guests both invited and unexpected, both corporal and supernatural. And the outcome is anything but certain.

"A slightly spooky, romantic mystery. Her often funny story, peppered with ghostly interludes, is capped by that rarest of animals: a twist ending that is totally earned. This should be a movie just so tweens and teens will come ask for the book. Place it in their hands; they will likely thank you."
—Kirkus

Sharp-witted narrative and lively characterizations help compensate for the convoluted and somewhat overstuffed plot of this contemporary first novel about a 13-year-old girl's run-in with ghosts. The haunting begins shortly after Lily and her recently jilted single mother move into Great Uncle Wesley's now empty oceanside estate in Cape May, N.J. Unbeknownst to either Lily or her mother, the premises and nearby beach are already occupied by a motley crew of spooks, whose points of view are periodically shared. Although the ghosts offer a humorous "insider" view of strange occurrences (e.g., Lily's shoes are filled with jam; later her hair is dyed bright pink), their narratives and sketchily drawn backgrounds are mostly distracting, cluttering an already complicated story line regarding Lily's longing for her missing father, her frustrations with her mother, and her mysterious ancestors. Ghostly pranks turn ghastly when the protagonist realizes that one of her deceased relatives is trying to communicate some unsavory family secrets that touch on arson, suicide and murder. The macabre turn of events is unsettling, but Lily's search to find the truth about the past remains intriguing. Ages 10-up.
