"Jason Chaffetz first fought the Deep State from the inside. Now he has written a powerful guide to how it works and how to fight it." —Peter Schweizer, #1 New York Times–bestselling author
Former Congressman and current Fox News contributor Jason Chaffetz explains how we ended up with a federal government that actively works to defend the Democratic party and undermine Trump.
The liberal media frequently declares the Obama years were free of scandal. They pretend this is true because every office in the Executive Branch worked to slow the information about Hillary's e-mails, the cover-up of Benghazi, the IRS, and so much more. Yet these same tight-lipped lifers leaked like a sieve once President Trump was sworn in, making it sound like everything he does is the new Watergate.
In Deep State, Jason Chaffetz explains how the federal government has grown into a branch of the Democratic party of the past decade or more. The former chairman of the House Oversight committee explains what really happened during the Obama administration, and how we can start to undo the damage caused by this army of liberal sycophants, and build a better future.
"Long after you finish this book, you'll be fuming about our out-of-control federal bureaucracy. We cannot afford to tolerate the outsourcing of our governance to career bureaucrats whose only loyalty is to big government." —Senator Mike Lee

The “deep state” is less a sinister conspiracy than a risk-deflecting bureaucratic juggernaut, according to this wonky jeremiad against the executive branch. Chaffetz, a Fox News commentator and former Congressman who was chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, paints federal agencies as a “vast, self-perpetuating bureaucracy” that will “weaponize everything in their power to destroy President Trump,” but devotes just two chapters to that ostensible struggle, with sketchy rehashes of anti-Trump intelligence leaks, anti-Trump emails by two FBI employees, and foot-dragging on Trump’s immigration agenda by ICE higher-ups and sanctuary cities. Most of the book recounts bureaucratic obstruction of Chaffetz’s committee work during the Obama administration, including investigations into sexual harassment at the EPA; the ATF’s Operation Fast and Furious, which facilitated arms sales to Mexican cartels; and Hillary Clinton’s email scandal. He paints this as a war of attrition, with bureaucrats stymieing his inquiries by ignoring subpoenas, lying under oath, withholding documents, retaliating against whistle-blowers, and sending a State Department lawyer to shadow him during a fact-finding trip on the Benghazi consulate attack. Chaffetz’s “deep state” dudgeon is overheated—his subject’s main crimes seem to be incompetence and dodging blame, not subversion—but his critique of executive branch corruption and secrecy is cogent and timely.
