Olympic gold medal–winning diver and beloved LGBTQ icon Tom Daley offers thirty exclusive knitting and crocheting patterns to enjoy and share.
During the Tokyo Olympics, British diver Tom Daley was often spotted calming his nerves with knitting needles in hand. His new favorite hobby, which he picked up during the Covid lockdown, combined with his gold medal performance, won him a new legion of fans. In fact, his Olympic inspired cardigan, made just before he left for Japan, grabbed nearly as many headlines as his win.

In his native England, Daley is beloved as a four-time Olympic medalist, well-known television personality, and activist in the LGBTQ space. In addition, Daley and his husband, the Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, are the parents of a toddler son, and many of Tom's projects are adorable toys or clothes for Robbie.

Now Tom has created thirty original projects for this book, sharing his joy of knitting and crocheting as a calming and creative outlet alongside his charming, witty personality. Full color and totally bespoke for this book, these projects run the gamut from toys to clothing for adults and kids to home décor. Full of color, full of joy, and Made with Love™ (the name of Tom's online store, selling projects, patterns and branded merchandise) this is yarn crafts made very cool.

Olympic diver Daley (Coming up for Air) encourages readers to indulge in bright colors and create their own style in this fun collection of knitting and crochet projects. After leading readers through essential techniques, Daley offers 30 patterns: there’s a stylish purple balloon-sleeve cardigan, a cute dog hat with pom-poms and neon-colored stripes, a patchwork blanket with tons of colors and textures, and a poncho in both adult and junior sizes. The projects come with a chart advising how to adapt size and materials for a perfect fit, and Daley includes troubleshooting tips and “masterclasses”that spotlight the specific skills, embellishments, and variations used in each project, such as chain-stitch embroidery on a sweater pattern and switching between colors on a vest. Daley’s irreverent style and welcoming tone are a treat—“When it comes to developing your own style of knitting or crochet, there are no rights or wrongs,” he writes, imploring readers to “just enjoy the process” —and his projects will encourage newbies while also providing challenges for those further along the path. This charming offering deserves a place on hobbyists’ shelves.

Daley, Britain's most decorated diver, was often seen knitting poolside. In 2021, he launched his own knitting line, and now he's utilizing his passion for the craft in this collection of knitting and crochet projects with a modern, youthful vibe. All patterns are designed to be unisex and size-inclusive, and the models are multiracial. Readers should be aware that the book is British, as the UK and the United States have different terms for crochet stitches. Both metric and U.S. measurements are incorporated. For beginners, the book contains useful sections with illustrations on yarn weights, terminology, tools, how to read pattern charts, troubleshooting tips, and the like. For crafters looking to improve their skill level, many patterns contain a Masterclass section on advanced techniques. There is also a section on aftercare for finished knits and on crafting as a tool for mindfulness. VERDICT There is plenty to like about this book. Its only drawback is that it is written exclusively for right-handers. Experienced left-handed crafters must do their own conversions, and left-handed beginners are advised to look elsewhere. An optional purchase for libraries with craft sections.--Marjorie Mann
